New year, new career Change your career one step at a time
New year ââ¬â time for a change. Along with the detox, the gym subscription, the resolution to learn that language, or run that marathon, is the urge to make a drastic and permanent change to your career. So, first things first ââ¬â what is it about a new career that makes you want to change? Is it your function? Are you an accountant that would prefer a new career in marketing? Or do you want to change your industry ââ¬â bored of retail and want to move into something digital? Perhaps youââ¬â¢re happy in your work and itââ¬â¢s your location you want to change ââ¬â similar job, different country. We often see students who say they want to change all three upon graduation. New function, new industry, new country ââ¬â all at once, bam, new life! Our advice to those considering a complete career transformation is: one thing at a time. Katharine, VP of Global Career Development at Hult, says: ââ¬Å"We help hundreds of students every year make significant changes to their existing careers, particularly through our One-Year MBA program. And take it from us ââ¬â your chances of long-term success are greater if you approach the change gradually.â⬠[Tweet Your chances of long-term success are greater if you approach career change gradually.] Changing one, or even two, elements of your career in the space of a one-year program is challenge enough, albeit an incredibly exciting and rewarding challenge. Change all three at once and your head will be spinning; it may be an adjustment too far and harm rather than enhance your career in the long term. Michael Lu, our VP of Global Marketing, is a typical Hult employee in that he has had a varied and international career. Coming to Europe via China, Hong Kong, New York, Singapore, and Australia, Michael started in management consulting, worked in e-commerce, moving on to interactive agency and media roles, before settling into a career in education. Hult News asked Michael if heââ¬â¢d ever done the ââ¬â¢triple whammyââ¬â¢ and changed function, industry, and country. ââ¬Å"No, I havenââ¬â¢t, not all at once,â⬠says Michael. ââ¬Å"I learnt from my first major career change when I made the move from consulting at PwC to marketing in the digital sector at News Corp that having a plan on paper is one thing, experiencing it is another. Itââ¬â¢s not just a ââ¬Ëcareer changeââ¬â¢, itââ¬â¢s a life change, and the adjustments can be bigger than you think, especially if youââ¬â¢re changing countries. ââ¬Å"You might think, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m used to travel, Iââ¬â¢ve had loads of different work experience, no big deal.ââ¬â¢ But when youââ¬â¢re getting your head around a new role, a new team, half a world away from friends and family do you really need to be getting up to speed with a new industry too? Are you going to be performing at your best when youââ¬â¢re contending with all these unknowns?â⬠The phrase ââ¬Ëmove the big rocks firstââ¬â¢ is pertinent here: what is the biggest, most important change you want to make in your career? Focusing on this number one priority will help ensure you achieve it to your satisfaction. [Tweet What is the biggest, most important change you want to make in your career?] Say you decide that the most important thing is for you to change the region youââ¬â¢re working in. An organization is more likely to take you on, sponsor your visa application, etc, if itââ¬â¢s for a role you have a great deal of experience in. Similarly, if itââ¬â¢s function you want to change moving from finance to marketing for example then the knowledge you have from working in a different area of the same industry will be point in your favor, as will your professional network. And getting as much experience in your desired destination role should be your priority. Focusing on one thing at a time doesnââ¬â¢t mean complete career transformation canââ¬â¢t be your end goal. Itââ¬â¢s just a question of maximizing your chances of success at each stage of the change. Once youââ¬â¢re firmly installed in your destination country, you can look to switching functions. Then, having gained experience in a new role, make the move to a different industry. Or any combination of the above. Gradual transformation is still total transformation, and it can happen in less time than you might think. Something Michael notes in hindsight: ââ¬Å"When I look back, to even five years ago, my career, my life itââ¬â¢s changed so much. Go back ten years, and itââ¬â¢s almost unrecognizable.â⬠Make the most of what your career has to offer with a Masters in International Business from Hult. The Development Of Gifted Adolescents - 876 Words
Development Script When it comes to development, there are many different forms. A person goes through not only physical and intellectual development but also emotional and even social development. While some develop efficiently in all areas, others can encounter issues with their development in some or even all areas. No matter how one develops though there is always questions about it. How it all works, what to expect, and even why one is not developing in a certain way or like another person. Imagine you are a parent, how would you explain these developments to your child? What would you tell them about the changes they may encounter physically, intellectually, emotionally, and socially? Physically Although gifted adolescents have a way of viewing things differently than that of an average adolescence, they still face the same physical changes. As the parent of a 14-year-old smart girl, it is important to approach the subject with honesty and maturity not to insult her intelligence. Analysis Of Edgar Allan Poe s A Tell Tale Heart - 1289 Words
Inside the Heart There are many well-known poets, but not many are as unique as Edgar Allan Poe. By the age of 13, Poe had become a creative poet (Biographies). Many of Poe s works were horrific fictional stories. His first book was published in Boston in 1827, called Tamerlane and other Poems. More of Poe s major works include Tales of the Grotesque a d Arabesque, which included his most spine tingling tales such as Ligeia and The Fall of the House of Usher. Most of Poe s works have a dark Gothic genre, and include themes of death, insanity, and evil. Poe became prominent for his literary works in 1845, after publishing The Raven (Biographies). In A Tell-Tale Heart, one of Poe s other famous horrific works, Poe conveysâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The narrator s guilt consumes him once more, the reader may assume, once he says, I hear all things in the heaven and in the earth. I heard many things in hell (Poe, 716). The narrator s guilty conscience causes him to hear and contemplate evil thoughts. This battle with his conscience, merges into one of Poe s different thematic subjects, good vs. evil. Last but not least, Poe exhibits guilt after committing the crime. The narrator cannot handle what he has done. The officers in the story present an even larger obstacle because their presence sends the narrator into insanity. He says, Villains! I shrieked, Dissemble no more! I admit the deed! Tear upon the planks! Here, here! It is the beating of his hideous heart! (Poe, 718). The narrator cannot sustain his act of being a fearless person, for his guilt drove him into such madness that he felt that he had begun to hear the beating of what he had thought to be the old man s heart, long after his gruesome murder (Kirkland, 13). Poe uses these examples to convey the message that guilt is sometimes too much of a burden on the human heart. In addition to Poe s theme of guilt to deliver his message, he also uses symbols. In The Tell-Tale Heart, the narrator becomes fascinated in this old man s eye. He names it the vulture eye and credits it for his behavior in murdering the old man. These two are so complex because they stand for many different things. The most reasonable interpretation of these two characters is that they represent OConnors view on the evil in society. The story begins with the typical family challenged by their grandmother who does not want to take the vacation to Florida. She has read about a crazed killer by the name of the Misfit who is on the run heading for Florida. Unfortunately, she is ignored by ever member of the family except for the little girl June Star who has come to read her grandmother like a book. Ironically, the morning of the trip the grandmother is dressed in her best Sunday clothes and the first one in the car ready to travel as June Star predicted she would be. The grandmothers dress is very nice for a trip she was horrified to take only a day earlier. The grandmother festooned in white gloves, a navy blue dress, and a matching hat, only for the sole purpose of being recognized as a woman in case someone saw her dead on the highway. This logic may seem absurd to anyone who is unfamiliar with aged aristocratic southern culture. Southerners of a high class would dress in their fine clothes when they traveled on vacations, especially ladies. The reader is clued into the grandmothers shallow thoughts of death. In the grandmothers mind, her clothing preparations prevent any doubts about her status as a fine lady. However, the Misfit later points out, There never was a body that gave the undertaker a tip. The grandmothers superficial readiness for death is a bleak characteristic and revealed when she encounters the Misfit. She shows herself to be the least prepared for death when she is left alone with him. As the trip progresses, the children reveal themselves as brats, mainly out of OConnors desire to illustrate the lost admiration for the familys respect for their grandmother. The family lost their respect for their grandmother only because she proposed a different life style. She was part of a Southern aristocratic culture where people behaved much more conservatively. Her beliefs, attitudes, and morals were from another time where people respected what older people had to say, and what they stood for. Naturally, she was never reluctant to share her opinion on matters, and was a little forceful about sharing her thoughts. She made sure to watch over her son, and kept a grip on what he did- even as a grown man. She refused to retire and become a composed old woman. She wanted to stay involved in the familys matters, and show that she was still an significant person with the knowledge that came with her age. Consequently, with all her bickering the family began to hold a grudge against her. The Grandmother lacked comprehension, and did not know that she became annoying, but she was not spitefully bothersome. The reader should notice when the family passes by a cotton field, five or six graves are exposed, and conceivably, they foreshadow the near future. Some interesting dialogue takes place when John Wesley asks, Wheres the plantation, and the grandmother replies, Gone with the Wind. This is perhaps another attempt by OConnor to illustrate the breakdown of the familys absence of respect and reverence for the grandmothers old life. The family s encounter with Red Sammy Butts serves as another outlet for OConnor to express how trust and .
